The art of waiting

We spend a lot of our time waiting, standing in queues, waiting for our trains to arrive, and we get frustrated that opportunities are not knocking on our door. The art of waiting has a secret: we can build our reality while we wait.

It was in the 60’s that the psychologist Walter Mischel at Stanford University performed an interesting task in which he tried to discover which skills are often associated with achieving goals and success.

The essential idea of Mischel’s study was to isolate the basic strategies to be able to train them and improve them from childhood. To do this, he drew up the following experiments:

  • He placed a group of 4-year-olds at a table in front of a jar of candy. The psychologist said that if they waited 20 minutes, an adult would bring a much larger reward.
  • Only a third of the children could stand the wait and another relationship was found in connection with this: these children later became more academically successful.
  • Aspects such as the ability to achieve, tolerate frustration, emotional control, motivation and the ability not to give in at the first glance determined the success of these children. They are dimensions that we can also see in adult life.

Good things require effort, dedication and passion

“Easily caught, easily passed away”. We’m sure you’ve heard this phrase. Sometimes when we come across someone who just wants temporary satisfaction, this will be a very fragile, selfish and uninterested relationship and it ends up with us getting hurt and it feels hopeless.

What is truly worth something takes time, courage and dedication. We must travel our paths with self-love and enthusiasm in order to achieve the goal: happiness.

If something good takes a while to arrive, we should not feel hopeless, because this process of daily struggles can enrich us through new roles and abilities that will allow us to discover ourselves.

So if the process of waiting is an opportunity to achieve our goals, then it is important that we reflect on the following aspects:

  • The need to “stabilize” self-love. If you feel the same fragility in your relationships, remember that only a strong self-confidence will respond to the individualism that sometimes surrounds us.
  • “Connect” not only to your reality, interact with it. Do not be a passive agent; your reality happens at every opportunity where multiple possibilities open up. Do not connect just to find a temporary satisfaction. You need to be dedicated and invest time, effort and hope.
  • The importance of freedom and security. You have the freedom to choose the path you want to take. No one should decide for you, and you should not feel compelled to receive outside recognition to know what you are worth. Good things will come if you move forward confidently and know what your values are, and also your limitations and your strengths.

It is always better to expect without exaggeration and to accept that we have no absolute control over the things around us. To accept uncertainty is not to give up, but to look at what we can really change within our room for maneuver to get what we want.

Do not get tired of waiting; Everything that is worth something requires patience, enthusiasm and a fighting attitude.
