“Too Old ” Does Not Exist, Just Too Many Excuses

There is no such thing as being too old to achieve your dreams, for success has no age limit. It is common to believe that in the 20s one must experiment and grow into oneself, in the 30s one must achieve a certain stability and in the 40s one must have come to terms with life. But there is no reason to always follow these guidelines.

False beliefs limit us. They make us put up walls and make excuses, which leads us to abandon things that life has planned for us and prevent ourselves from taking action. We try to dampen the desire to achieve what would really make us happy because we think it is no longer suitable for us as we get older.

The future is not just valid for younger people. You never get too old to keep growing and learning. It is often old people who set a good example and show that age is just a number. They know the benefits of being persistent and never giving up the desire to achieve their goals better than anyone else.

A good example is Harry Bernstein – a writer who spent most of his life writing. This author saw his novels dismissed one by one, but never gave up. He liked what he was doing, had a passion for it and never threw in the towel because people closed the door in his face. It was not until he was 96 years old that he finally got what he was waiting for. The latest book he wrote, The Invisible Wall, was published.

Harry Bernstein did not see the ravages of time as a reason to lose hope, and decided to continue with what satisfied him – he was not too old. How many times have you given up because it has been rejected time and time again? Older people know that this is just a test to see if what you are doing is really worth all your time, effort and perseverance. Children are also aware of this; You rarely see children give up when they hear their first “no”. They know that this is just the beginning of a negotiation.

Years pass, but the chances of realizing your dreams do not. There is still so much prejudice when it comes to age. If you are so many years old, you should no longer dress in a specific way; if you are a grandparent, you can no longer skateboard. Even though these ideas are ridiculous, we still think about them. This is because our culture and our society have established certain guidelines for behavior that we must begin to follow at a young age.

Some college students are lucky enough to have an older person as a classmate. Many institutions follow plans that promote access to universities for older people who did not have the chance to study what they wanted when they were younger. But… do they not have a harder time keeping the information?

Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Young people who do not like what they are studying or who do not have enough attention may have just as much difficulty with learning as older people. Because it is not age that matters, but attitude and will. Now let’s present some famous examples of older people who achieved success when no one expected it, not even themselves:

  • Samuel L. Jackson (actor): Before he turned 39, he played minor roles. But the movie Jungle Fever made him the icon he is today.
  • Henry Ford (Founder of the Ford Motor Company): It was not until the age of 45 that he created the revolutionary Ford Model T.
  • Charles Darwin (naturalist): he never showed interest in social conditions and dedicated his life entirely to his passion. And at the age of 50, his book On the Origin of Species changed the scientific world forever.
  • Julia Child (chef): she initially had a career in advertising and intelligence, but at the age of 50 she decided to write her first cookbook. This was what led to her career as a chef.
  • Ray Kroc (businessman): he sold milkshake mixers until he was asked to buy McDonalds at the age of 52. Ray made the brand the largest restaurant chain in the world.
  • Anna Mary Robertson Moses (artist): known as “Grandma Moses”, began her career as an artist when she was 78 years old. One of her paintings sold for $1.2 million.

You’re never too old to do what you love. What do you have to lose?

You can come up with a great idea when you are 50 years old. A good business idea can go through your head at the age of 70. Success has no expiration date and can not get too old, and the same goes for starting a career, learning something new or completing a project. People who were born a long time ago have no limits to what they can do and achieve. It’s just an excuse that keeps people from trying new things.
